The Outdoor Island Ceremony: Designing with Water on All Sides

Belle Mer’s outdoor ceremony configuration is among the most distinctive in Newport. With water visible from nearly every angle and a landscape that is deliberately open and uncluttered, the ceremony florals need to do significant work — creating a sense of architecture and framing in a space that has very little built structure to rely on.

For this reason, ceremony arches and freestanding floral structures are particularly important at Belle Mer’s outdoor ceremony lawn. A well-designed ceremony arch does not just look beautiful in photographs — it also creates the visual sense of a room within the open landscape, giving the ceremony a defined center that draws guests’ attention and gives the couple a meaningful place to stand. Without that structure, an outdoor waterfront ceremony can feel visually unanchored, regardless of how beautiful the setting is.

In terms of design approach, I tend toward lush, organic structures at Belle Mer’s outdoor ceremony space — arches built from abundant garden blooms, trailing greenery, and textural foliage rather than spare or geometric forms. The natural setting rewards this approach. Furthermore, because wind is always a consideration at a waterfront property, all freestanding structures are anchored and all bloom selections account for outdoor conditions.

The Harbour Room: Designing for a Modern Ballroom with Water Views

The Harbour Room is Belle Mer’s primary reception ballroom, and it is a genuinely beautiful space — clean-lined, modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows on the water side that frame Newport Harbor throughout the reception. Because of those windows, the light in this room is exceptional, particularly in the hours before sunset when the harbor light reflects off the water and fills the room with warm, moving color.

However, the Harbour Room’s contemporary architecture presents a different design challenge from Newport’s historic venues. In contrast to Rosecliff or The Chanler, there is no ornate plasterwork or period detailing to respond to. Instead, the design language must come from the florals themselves — which means that arrangements at Belle Mer need to be lush and dimensional enough to fill the space with presence, since the architecture is not going to do that work for them.

For Harbour Room receptions, I typically recommend a combination of tall centerpiece arrangements on round reception tables — which allow views through to the windows behind — alongside generously scaled cocktail arrangements, a substantial escort card display, and florals on the bar and welcome surfaces that create warmth from the moment guests enter. Together, these elements transform a beautiful but architecturally neutral room into a genuinely lush and immersive environment.

Candlelight in the Harbour Room

One of the most important design decisions at Belle Mer is the candlelight strategy. As the sun sets and the harbor light fades, the Harbour Room can shift from luminous to dim relatively quickly, particularly in spring and fall when golden hour arrives earlier. Repurposing ceremony elements — transferring arch blooms into the bar arrangement, moving aisle arrangements to cocktail surfaces — is one of the most effective ways to extend the ceremony investment into this portion of the day without requiring a completely separate florals budget.

Palettes That Perform at Belle Mer

Belle Mer’s clean, contemporary aesthetic accepts virtually every palette, but certain approaches tend to read exceptionally well in this setting. Soft, romantic palettes in white, blush, and dusty sage are the most consistently beautiful — they echo the coastal landscape and photograph beautifully against both the daytime harbor light and the evening candlelight inside. For couples who want more color, garden-inspired palettes incorporating dusty mauve, lavender, and soft terracotta create warmth without fighting the venue’s modern lines.

In terms of flower selection, garden roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas, ranunculus, and lisianthus are the core building blocks I reach for most frequently at Belle Mer.
