The Chanler at Cliff Walk Wedding Flowers: Floral Design Guide for Newport’s Oceanfront Boutique Estate

An intimate Gilded Age estate on the Cliff Walk, where the Atlantic does much of the work.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk sits directly on Newport’s Cliff Walk, with unobstructed Atlantic views. Built in 1873, it feels residential rather than palatial: warm wood, layered textiles, and an old-world intimacy that sets it apart from Newport’s larger mansions. Weddings here are small and personal, which shapes everything about the floral plan.

Our philosophy for The Chanler is to edit rather than add. The ocean is the main event, so florals should amplify it, frame it, and warm the spaces around it, never compete with it.

“The Chanler doesn’t need us to fill a room. It needs florals that know exactly where to let the ocean speak.”Christine, Founder & Lead Designer, Plant Girl Floral

Ceremony Locations and How to Design for Each

Location Character Floral approach
Oceanfront lawn The strongest views, at the edge of the bluff above the Cliff Walk, and the most wind exposure A refined arbor or asymmetrical installation anchored with weighted bases or ground stakes; low, wind-resistant pieces
Elevated terrace Architectural framing with some shelter from the wind, ocean views intact Fuller, taller arrangements are possible with less wind risk
Indoor options Climate-controlled rooms, including an oceanfront restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows A low, lush ground piece or restrained altar arrangement that keeps the ocean view open; mantel installations; more delicate blooms

On the lawn, an arch that sits off-center or concentrates florals on one side frames the water instead of blocking it. Timing matters too: late afternoon brings golden light but stronger breezes, while morning and early afternoon are usually calmer. The lawn has little shade, so heat-tolerant varieties are the safer choice in peak sun, and an indoor ceremony plan should always be ready.

Aisle design for a narrow lawn

The ceremony lawn fits roughly 10 to 12 rows for 100 guests, and the aisle is narrow. Rather than lining every row, we use one of two approaches:

  • Alternating markers on every other row (10 to 12 pieces) for rhythm and better photos.
  • The bookend strategy: six to eight larger pieces at the front, middle, and back rows to anchor the aisle.

Elevated arrangements on stands or antique pedestals, shepherd’s hooks with hanging arrangements, and ground-based installations all work, as long as they’re secured against the wind.

Flowers That Hold Up on the Cliff Walk

Blooms for an oceanfront ceremony

  • Garden roses: varieties like Patience, Charity, and Juliet have sturdy petals that handle wind and humidity.
  • Spray roses add fullness and soft tones.
  • Hydrangea in white and blush works when properly conditioned and hydrated.
  • Greenery: Italian ruscus, eucalyptus, and olive stay flexible and hold color in sun.
  • Use with care: ranunculus, anemones, and wispy ferns are delicate in ocean wind, so we save them for the tent or indoors.

The Tented Reception

Most Chanler receptions are held in a tent on the oceanfront lawn, steps from the ceremony. We design around the tent’s height, its lighting, and the flow of dinner service.

  • Low centerpieces: lush and garden-inspired, with greenery cascading over brass compotes, mercury glass, or simple ceramic vessels. They keep sightlines open across smaller tables.
  • Elevated centerpieces: blooms on gold or clear acrylic stands with trailing greenery, which sit above sightlines and photograph beautifully under tent lighting.
  • Accent florals: bud vases on cocktail tables, bar florals, and greenery at the tent entrance tie the spaces together.

Candlelight

After sunset, candlelight carries the tent. We layer taper candles in brass or gold holders with low florals, votives scattered at varied heights, pillar candles as grounded focal points on the bar or escort display, and hurricane lanterns anywhere the breeze reaches. Overhead chandeliers or string lights, table-level candles, and ground uplighting together make the tent glow.

Repurposing Ceremony Florals

Because the ceremony and tent are so close together, The Chanler is one of the easiest venues in Newport for repurposing. During the first 15 to 20 minutes of cocktail hour, our team moves ceremony pieces into the reception, and the full transition takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

  • Altar arrangements become the sweetheart table backdrop, a bar installation, or the escort card focal point.
  • Aisle markers move to cocktail tables.
  • Garden-rose aisle pieces reappear at the sweetheart table.

We design these pieces in portable, non-ceremonial vessels like brass urns, ceramic, or wooden boxes, built to look beautiful from every angle and at two distances: 10 to 15 feet away on the aisle, and up close at the table. Aisle florals used only for the ceremony typically cost $1,500 to $4,000 for 100 guests, so a repurposing plan is one of the smartest ways to stretch your budget.

Palettes for The Chanler

Soft whites, cream, blush, and muted sage suit both the ocean backdrop and the historic interiors, and they photograph cleanly in Newport’s bright coastal light. Build dimension through texture by mixing petal shapes and bloom sizes rather than adding more color. For more ideas, see Color Palettes for The Chanler.

Common Mistakes at The Chanler

  • Mismatched scale: arrangements sized for a ballroom overwhelm these intimate spaces, while tiny pieces disappear against the ocean.
  • Blocking the view with tall or centered ceremony structures.
  • Ignoring the wind on the exposed lawn.
  • Underinvesting in flower quality: budget-grade blooms stand out against the venue’s luxury finish. Fewer, better arrangements look more expensive.
  • Trendy over timeless designs that date quickly in photographs.

Floral Investment at The Chanler

Weddings at The Chanler at Cliff Walk with Plant Girl Floral typically range from $15,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on guest count, ceremony design, tent installations, and bloom selection. Our minimum for any wedding is $10,000, and every proposal is itemized. If the budget is tight, we prioritize high-impact pieces like the bridal bouquet and ceremony statement, and simplify cocktail tables and secondary spaces.

Planning tips

  • Book 12 to 18 months ahead; requests within six months may cost more.
  • Bring your reception palette, lighting plan, guest count, and photos of floral looks you love to the first meeting.
  • Coordinate installation and breakdown around the property’s schedule, including its narrow staircases and historic room layouts.
  • Confirm an indoor ceremony plan in case of weather.
