Newport Mansion Wedding Flowers
What it takes to design for five of Newport’s grandest properties — Rosecliff, Marble House, Castle Hill, OceanCliff, and Belle Mer.
I’m Christine, founder of Plant Girl Floral. Newport’s mansion venues are some of the most architecturally significant wedding settings in the country, and each one calls for a genuinely different floral approach. This guide walks through five properties couples ask me about most, and what I think about when designing for each.

Rosecliff
Gilded Age Ballroom
Grand, romantic, and unapologetically ornate.
Rosecliff’s heart-shaped staircase and famous ballroom set an inherently romantic tone before a single flower is placed. The architecture here is already doing significant visual work, so my approach leans into complementing its scale — full, lush arrangements with classic garden blooms rather than minimal or overly modern shapes that would feel out of step with the room.
Floral Considerations
The ballroom’s grand proportions can absorb larger centerpieces and statement pieces without feeling overdone. Outdoor lawn ceremonies at Rosecliff also benefit from soft, romantic palettes that echo the mansion’s ornate character.
My studio has designed weddings at Rosecliff as part of a dedicated series of work at the property, and it remains one of my favorite settings for classic, romantic floral design at scale.
Marble House

Historic Landmark
Opulent, formal, and steeped in gilded-age history.
Marble House is one of Newport’s most significant historic properties, built during the height of the Gilded Age and now preserved as a museum available for select private events. Designing here means working within a preservation-first framework: no attaching hardware to walls, moldings, or historic surfaces, and careful coordination around the museum’s conservation requirements.
Floral Considerations
Given the property’s formal, ornate architecture, floral design tends to work best when it echoes that same sense of classic grandeur — think structured arrangements, rich textures, and a restrained but elegant color story that complements rather than competes with the interior’s marble and gilding.
Because of its landmark status, any couple considering Marble House should confirm current event policies directly with the venue early in planning, since availability and requirements can be more particular than at a purpose-built event venue.
Castle Hill

Cliffside Estate
Dramatic ocean views with an intimate, storybook feel.
Castle Hill Inn’s cliffside lawn, overlooking Narragansett Bay, is one of the most photographed ceremony backdrops in Newport. The setting is dramatic enough that floral design needs to support the view rather than block or overpower it.
Floral Considerations
I typically favor lower-profile ceremony arrangements here, with sturdier blooms and secure mechanics to handle the wind that’s common on an open cliffside lawn. Reception spaces at Castle Hill tend to favor a softer, more intimate palette that echoes the surrounding natural landscape.
My studio has designed weddings at Castle Hill Inn, and the site remains one of the clearest examples of letting a coastal view lead the design rather than competing with it.
OceanCliff
Harbor & Grounds Estate
Sweeping harbor views with flexible indoor and outdoor spaces.
OceanCliff’s combination of expansive grounds, harbor views, and multiple indoor and outdoor spaces gives couples more flexibility than some of Newport’s more singular mansion venues. That flexibility means floral design here often needs to work across several distinct settings within the same wedding day.
Floral Considerations
Because ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception may each happen in a different part of the property, I plan floral design as a cohesive story that carries a consistent palette and material choices across each space, rather than treating them as disconnected moments.
My studio has designed weddings at OceanCliff, and its layout is well suited to couples wanting variety across their day without sacrificing a unified aesthetic.
Belle Mer

Waterfront Tented Venue
Clean, modern lines against an open waterfront backdrop.
Belle Mer’s tented, waterfront setting is architecturally different from Newport’s historic mansions — its clean, modern structure gives floral design more room to introduce texture and organic contrast without competing with ornate existing detail.
Floral Considerations
I often use lush, textural centerpieces and hanging installations from the tent’s structure to soften the modern lines, along with sturdier blooms suited to an open waterfront setting. Belle Mer’s flexible layout also supports larger guest counts and bigger installations than some of Newport’s historic properties can accommodate.
My studio has designed weddings at Belle Mer, and it remains one of the best Newport venues for couples wanting a fuller, more contemporary floral statement.
“Every one of these properties is trying to tell you something different. My job is to listen to the building before I design a single stem.”— Christine, Plant Girl Floral
A few things worth confirming with any Newport mansion venue
- Restrictions on open flame, attaching hardware, or moving existing furnishings
- Available load-in and load-out windows for vendors
- Whether outdoor ceremony sites have an indoor rain-plan location, and what that space allows
- Any preservation-related insurance or vendor requirements specific to the property
If you’re considering any of these venues, or comparing a few of them for your wedding, I’d love to talk through what floral design could look like at each.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you get married at Marble House in Newport?
Marble House is a historic Gilded Age mansion operated as a museum by the Preservation Society of Newport County, and it is available for private event rental, including weddings, subject to the property’s preservation guidelines.
Do Newport’s historic mansions have restrictions on floral installations?
Yes, most historic mansion venues in Newport restrict open flame, attaching hardware to walls, moldings, or railings, and require careful handling of floors and antique furnishings, which shapes how floral installations can be designed and installed.
Which Newport mansion venue is best for a large wedding?
Belle Mer and OceanCliff offer some of the most flexible layouts for larger guest counts, while venues like Rosecliff and Marble House suit weddings that want to make the most of a smaller, more architecturally dramatic footprint.
How far in advance should I book a florist for a Newport mansion wedding?
Most couples should book their florist 12 to 18 months in advance for a Newport mansion wedding, especially for peak season dates between May and October, since experienced florists and popular venues both book quickly.
